Indigenous groups in Mexico are rediscovering their
ancient roots and traditions and they are expressing them
in various ways. Through songs, writings, paintings and by
creating their own unique styles, they are offering an
abundance of gifts to the visitors of Mexico.
One of the examples of this re-birth is the BIENHI group in
San Miguel Cajonos, Oaxaca. As their name implies in
Zapotec, BIENHI (B-yeh-nee) is a word that describes, "that
time of the morning where you can glance the morning
light reaching into the dark night sky" As the group's
founder describes it, "It is a description of hope." She
continues, " Many years ago, the towns folk used to raise
silk worms to produce silk threads. This was an activity
amongst many others. The town was know throughout the
region for making twine which would then be transformed
into ropes, colorful sacks, or belts for use in the field, etc.
It's inhabitants have tried other "community" efforts at
being self sufficient through the growth of coffee, corn
and fruit trees. Most of these have failed due to the
people having emigrated first to Oaxaca, then Mexico City
and in the early 90's, Los Angeles, California (thus the
popular term - Oaxacalifornia - due to the large community
in Los Angeles who come form the Oaxaca).
Another thorny issue amongst the town's people was the
exploitation of their forest resources by a few individuals
who enriched themselves at the expense of the town. This
brought animosity into the town's people, in essence it
divided them amongst two camps. Unfortunately family
members where caught on both conflicting sides. This
issue drove the younger crowd further away from town
and all the way to Los Angeles. This exodus of young
people has left the town apparently without a future.
However, this is where the BIENHI group come in.
Their attempt is to create a viable silk producing industry
in town. So far they have received valuable help from
various government institutions in the form of training,
education and funds. Their long term goal is to bring back
those young people who have left and who because of
their immigration status cannot find jobs in the U.S.
Already they have formed a society and are looking at
increasing their numbers in order to pump up production
of silk and articles made from the silk produced.
BIENHI will be one of the suppliers of silk goods for Our
Cultural Imports. We will also help them to promote not
only their product but also to assist them in their efforts to
improve the economy and cultural survival of San Miguel
Cajonos. |

Los grupos indígenas en México están volviendo a descubrir sus antiguas raíces y tradiciones. Ellos los están expresando en varias maneras. Por las canciones, escrituras, pinturas y creando sus propios estilos únicos, son ofrecimiento de una abundancia de regalos a los visitantes de México.
Uno de los ejemplos de este renacimiento es el grupo de Bienhi de San Miguel Cajonos, Oaxaca. Como su nombre implica en Zapoteco, Benhi es una palabra que describe, "ese luz de la mañana donde usted puede echar ver el alcanzar ligero de la mañana en el cielo oscuro de la noche "como la fundadora del grupo lo describe, "Es una descripción de esperanza."ella continúa," Hace muchos años, la gente de el pueblo criaba los gusanos de seda para producir hilos de rosca. Esto era una actividad entre muchos otras. El pueblo era conocido por toda la región porque hacian laso que sería transformado en cuerdas, sacos coloridos, o correas para el uso en el campo, etc. Sus habitantes han intentado otros esfuerzos comunitarios como el crecimiento del café, árboles frutals del maíz y. La mayoría de éstos han fallado debido a la gente que a emmigrado; primero a Oaxaca, despues a la Ciudad de México y en los años 90, a Los Angeles, California (así el termino popular en Estados Unidos-Oaxacalifornia-debido a la gran comunidad de Oaxaquenos en Los Ángeles).
Otra razon entre la gente de San Miguel fue la explotación indiscriminada de sus recursos forestales por algunos individuos que se enriquecieron a expensas de el pueblo. Esto trajo animosidad entre la gente de el pueblo. Esencialmente los dividió entre dos campos. Desafortunadamente miembros de familia estaban en ambos lados de el conflicto. Este evento condujo a los jovenes a emigrar mas lejos de el pueblo hasta Los Ángeles. Este éxodo de la gente joven ha dejado al parecer al pueblo sin un futuro. Sin embargo, Aqui es adonde interviene el grupo de Bienhi.
Su tentativa es crear una industria que produsca seda en gran cantidad en el pueblo. Han recibido hasta ahora ayuda valiosa de varias instituciones gobernamentales.Tanto en la forma de educación instruccion y de fondos monetarios. Su meta a largo plazo es motivar a esa gente joven que se han ido y que debido a su estado lega de inmigración no pueden encontrar trabajos en el extranjero. Se ha formado esta sociedad con miras de aumentar el numero deproduccion de la seda y de los artículos hechos por la producción de seda.
BIENHI sera uno de los productores de rebozos y otros articulos de seda para nosotros. Nosotros les ayudaremos a promover no solo su producto pero tambien con sus proyectos para mejorar tanto la economia como la cultura de el pueblo de San Miguel Cajonos. |
